Multifunctional products: a solution to combat overconsumption
Some products are so cleverly formulated that they perform several functions at once! The advantage is that instead of buying 2, 3 or 4 products (or more), you will only need one. It saves space, saves money, but also makes for more virtuous consumption. One of our favorite examples in this area is What Matters Universal Oil. You can use it to nourish the skin on your face and body, massage yourself, remove makeup, protect your hair, pamper your beard or even perfume your bath. Non-comedogenic and free of essential oils, it can be used by the whole family... and refillable!
In the same genre, more luxurious, you also have the blue balm from Odacité . A safe bet for dry, fragile and mature skin, since it contains a slew of restorative and soothing plant extracts, including blue chamomile. Again, don't hesitate to use it for several things (it's made for that!): makeup remover balm, nourishing day care, night mask, intensive care for the eye and lip contour, comforting décolleté balm or even after-sun repair care.
This multi-use aspect even exists in the makeup department. All Tigers offers a 3-in-1 pencil that acts as an eyeliner, a light shadow or an intense eyeshadow. The secret lies in its creamy and melting formula, which makes it very easy to work on the eyelid. And to go further, the brand donates 1% of its sales to an association that preserves the wild Asian tiger. Also check out Ilia's aptly named multi-stick : a cult formula that can be used as a blush, eyeshadow and tinted lip balm.
Packaging: recyclable, eco-designed, refillable
To go further than recycling, you can turn to eco-designed packaging. This is often packaging made with upcycled materials. In this category, see for example the brand Salt & Stone and their best-seller: the Santal & Vétiver deodorant . Its bottle is made from plastic recovered from the oceans. Even better: its manufacturing process relies on solar and hydraulic energy. When you know that 3.5 million deodorants are sold worldwide each year, inevitably, this is the kind of detail that makes you think. 😊
FYI, beyond packaging, it is even possible to find upcycled ingredients in your cosmetics. This is the case for Grums Aarhus coffee seed oil and the rest of the range, by the way. The brand made a name for itself by collecting coffee grounds from Danish cafes… and transforming them into a star ingredient for its skincare products. So, nothing goes to waste!
Today, more and more brands are offering refillable packaging. Refills are generally lighter than full-size bottles, which limits their impact compared to buying a new bottle. This is the logic adopted by What Matters, particularly with its multi-surface cleaner , toothpaste and shower gel . The possibility of refilling your products also exists on the makeup side, with Aime powder foundation or RMS ReDimension highlighter .
Solid cosmetics and the 0% water option
We know that our water resources are not inexhaustible. And the water in our cosmetics is only an excipient: it has no real use for the skin as such, other than to transport the real active ingredients into the epidermis. And yet, this "useless" water can represent up to 90% of a product's formula, particularly in our beloved moisturizers.
It is based on this observation that Savon Stories launched a range of solid products with 0% water and 100% active ingredients. These are therefore concentrated formulas, all the more interesting for the skin as they are based on cold manufacturing processes and organic raw materials. The result is remarkably intensely nourishing care, such as the solid serum with prickly pear oil or the solid face & body lotion with peach .
It is also possible to choose solid cosmetics to take care of your hair. Although it contains a small amount of water, Odacité's 552M solid shampoo nevertheless focuses on reducing daily plastic waste - including 552 million bottles of shampoo each year in the United States alone. Also check out the Umaï brand, which has a wide range of hair products, including a purple shampoo (for blonde, white, and gray hair) and a detangling conditioner (for ages 3 and up) .
Favor local and short supply chains
We are always happy to offer you Swiss brands, brands that come from here! This is the case of Swish, a local company that has set itself the goal of creating the best natural deodorant on the market – and that you can find right here on our e-shop. This deodorant is developed from A to Z in Switzerland, from carefully selected organic and organic raw materials. The little extra is its 100% recyclable tube (made from plastic made from sugar cane).
In our “made in Switzerland” section, we also chose the Hymne brand and its two food supplements: Hercule (for the day) and Morphée (for the night) . They are formulated in Geneva by a naturopath-nutritionist and her daughter. In addition to being local, they have the particularity of exploiting the benefits of mycotherapy in a liquid and gourmet form. Their adaptogenic mushroom extracts come exclusively from European organic farming. Even more responsible: everything is packaged in large recyclable glass bottles.
Without limiting yourself to Switzerland, you can also turn to brands from neighboring countries that favor local ingredients and short supply chains. The French brand Umaï, in addition to offering solid products, relies on common sense with a supply that promotes the know-how of French or European territories. More than 80% of their ingredients are French! You will find milk thistle oil from the Rhône in its makeup remover , plum butter from Gascony in its gentle shampoo or Seatrace from Camargue in its curl cream .
