Coffee Focus: Why You Should Make It Your Cup of Tea

What is more deliciously authentic and more undeniably consensual than a good cup of coffee?

Not much, except maybe two good cups of coffee. 😉 Discovered in Ethiopia and arriving in Europe in the 16th century , coffee beans have never left our kitchens since then… but not only that!

A flagship grind of grandmother's remedies, coffee is also a beauty ally capable of being as gentle on the skin as it is powerful in the mouth. Here's how to return to the roots of this caffeinated tradition and enjoy its many benefits in an optimized version.

Why is coffee so interesting?

For its composition, of course! Coffee beans are not only concentrated in flavors… They are small plant bombs full of macronutrients. It is this carefully arranged ensemble that gives it its organoleptic qualities and its powerful cosmetic benefits. In addition to carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and amino acids, it contains a nice dose of remarkable substances.

Caffeine. It is a psychostimulant substance. It quickly improves our level of concentration, our alertness, our brain capacities and our physical abilities. It gives coffee a slightly bitter flavor. On the beauty side, it is known as a slimming active ingredient (orange peel, cellulite) and as a toning ingredient (dark circles, bags).

Trigonelline. It belongs to the same family as caffeine, namely alkaloids. Some of it is broken down during the roasting process of coffee beans, which gives it some of its aromas. Several studies have shown that it boosts cognitive functions (particularly memory) and that it would limit the decline of muscle mass.

Chlorogenic acids. They offer powerful antioxidant activity, meaning they slow down the damage caused by excess free radicals in the body. 5-caffeoylquinic acid is the most abundant in green coffee. However, these precious substances are fragile: over-roasting destroys them almost completely.

Melanoidins. These compounds appear when coffee is roasted (which shows that it doesn't only have drawbacks!). In addition to being antioxidants, they are also useful in preventing cavities and imbalances in the oral ecosystem. Some research also attributes anti-inflammatory properties to them.

Drinking coffee: good or bad idea?

Many of us begin a sort of “withdrawal” from coffee after reading alarmist articles. However, coffee is like all good things: you should not abuse it. Remember the Parcel Principle: it’s the dose that makes the poison. In this case, the European Food Safety Agency recommends a maximum of 4 cups of black coffee per day.

Like any stimulant, coffee activates our sympathetic nervous system, meaning it puts our body on alert. It blocks our adenosine receptors, a molecule that has a calming effect, to instead boost the release of excitatory neurotransmitters. That's why a good ristretto is so effective in increasing our alertness! On the other hand, you should know that it acts on the same mechanisms that regulate our responses to stress, which can explain an increase in anxiety in the event of excess caffeine. From then on, the vicious circle sets in: we multiply the coffees to cope with stress, fatigue increases, energy decreases, and so on. This is why we see more and more coffees enriched with adaptogenic plants, considered beneficial for homeostasis. The So Mush Organic brand is based on this theory to develop +++ coffees.

News flash: coffee consumption is not recommended for those who are prone to iron deficiency anemia, because caffeine hinders the absorption of iron. The same goes for pregnant women: it is better to go easy on espresso and filter coffee (max. 200 mg of caffeine per day according to EFSA).
